Perspiration and Hearing Devices

7/6/06

Spring is gone and summer is here!  Nothing is better than the sunshine, blue skies and all theavailable activities that come with it. But summer in the Redding area is not a breezy one.  Summer in the Redding area is often filledwith unforgivable heat.  Visitors ofRedding call it record-breaking heat, but the locals just call it summer.  The heat is not something that can beignored, nor is the perspiration that occurs just standing outside for morethan 5 minutes.

Hearing devices that sit behind the ear are affected themost by perspiration because they come in direct contact or in the run off areaof the sweat glands.  However, othertypes of devices can still have trouble with the added moisture that the bodyand weather generate during the summer. So what can be done to battle the waron perspiration?

What has been found to be very affective in preventingperspiration getting into the hearing device is wearing some sort of sweatbandand putting the hearing device into a miniature sock.  These types of preventative measures are not cosmeticallyappealing, however they do help reduce the affects of perspiration on hearingdevices.

There is also a dry aid kit that helps dry up the moisturethat may be carried inside of the hearing device that, if not cleaned out, willcause damage to the mechanical parts all the way to the circuit of theinstrument.  Once rust has started toform it can cause serious irreversible damage that may result in a lab visitfor that hearing device.

For many, just a simple habit of putting yourhearing devices in a warm dry place with the battery door open and the batteryremoved can be help push its fate off another day.  But extra measures during the summer months do require extraattention for the hearing device.  Sowear the sweatband when you can and if your able to stop by our office and pickup a dry aid kit we would be happy to help you and show you how to set itup.
